I would have liked it better if I knew more of the books they read.
I really enjoyed this book. I felt like I could relate to a lot of it. A major plus is checking out the different books that were discussed in it. :)
This is a beautiful and well written memoir about a man & his Mother sharing and discussing books as she goes through treatment for terminal cancer.
Both Will and Mary Anne Schwalbe are charming characters with great intellect and insight. Unfortunately for me, about halfway through the book, I grew tired of them and their perfect relationship. She clearly was a remarkable woman butI started to feel overwhelmed by her goodness and annoyed by the advice about helping refugees. Is that my guilty conscience talking? It sure is! Whatever the reason, it reduced my enjoyment.
I am grateful for the interesting book suggestions contained within and I am grateful to have picked up some tips about how to converse with seriuosly ill people.
The book is certainly worth reading but not one of my favorites.

This has been on my shelf for YEARS until I recently listened to it on audio. 1/3 book discussion and 2/3 cancer memoir, Will Schwalbe really paints a vivid portrait of his mother, who seems like an incredible woman. This one lacks the sadness that may be too much for some readers. It's really a celebration of her life and love of people and books.
Just couldn't get into it. Tried the audio version...it may have been the reader.

What I most enjoyed about this book was the book discussions between will and his mother, Mary Anne. She was a very interesting woman and I am glad I have learned more about her life.
Certainly there were some things that annoyed me about the style of the book, but overall I would recommend this book to other book lovers.

A book about books, what could be greater? And they don’t just mention all the books, they discuss them among other things. It wasn’t as sad as I was afraid it would end up being either.
Schwalbe asks his dying mother to be in a "book club" with him as they sit through her chemo treatments. This is a story about that, but also about how books bring us together and shape our experiences.
A beautiful tribute to a remarkable woman and an ode to books. It made me miss my own mother all over again.
