An enjoyable children’s classic. I’d like to explore more by this author.
This was bought because it appeared on the Times best 100 fantasy books of all time list and oh was it a struggle for me.
In the beginning I really didn't like the writing, but you get used to the style and can sort of appreciate it (when it didn't annoy me).
The characters were so unsufferably spoiled and selfish it was hard to like them.
I admit this might be more enjoyable for kids, and it must have been something when it came out. Reading it today it sparks with stereotypes, despite breaking through by having one of the girls more or less the ringleader of the group.
There are also some witty and snarky comments on society that might have been scandalous back in the day.
So in the light of that I'd say the book deserves praise. But reading it today as an adult it was barely enjoyable.

DNFed at the point when they started dressing themselves up as "Red Indians" and painted their skin red.

Kind of charming but a bit formulaic and littered with the sexism, classis and racism of the author's time.

I thought I might get to the end without encountering any overt racism, but I was wrong.
