I first finished this book when I was about 13 or 14 and since then I've read it twice or thrice. For the most part, it's such a fun read, a delightful and wholesome story—but there is, unfortunately, a racist subplot in there that depicts Romani people as child-stealing g*psies, so... keep that in mind.

Extremely dated, but decent concept and the children are written like actual children.

This was a fun read, and a series of great reminders to be careful what you wish for!

Some caution recommended for very young readers as the children in the story are more realistic than they are good role models.

So this was a 5th grade read, and it was plain and simple. I took me only about 2 days to read and write my book report, and it was not bad....The book is certainly a adventure, but way to easy for my preference, and it was just, yeah.

One of the less racist, less sexist children’s books from the early 1900s I’ve read so far (there is insensitive rep of Native Americans and there’s some toxic masculinity related to fighting and not crying)! This is a fun story about magic and all the ways wishes can go awry. I realized I must have seen a TV adaptation of this book as a kid, because some of the chapters were extremely familiar.

An excellent story about being careful what you wish for.

My kids (9, 6, 5) and I loved this audiobook! We had a lot of fun conversations about what we would wish for and how wishes can go wrong. I will say that I would have skipped over the chapter about Indigenous People if I had pre-read the book. I'm just not a fan of the old-fashioned, degrading view that so many books from that time period portray. That being said, it was otherwise a fantastic book!
