Read this with one of my third graders. It’s a good read for dog lovers. Ranger is a good boy and I thought his relationship with Sam was great but the ending was a bit rushed for my taste.

Absolutely LOVED this book! What’s not to love? Ranger, a young golden retriever is deemed unfit to be an official “Search and Rescue” dog and settles into life as a family pet. But he’s in for a big surprise after he digs up a mystery first-aid-rescue kit that also acts as a time-travel portal. In this book, Ranger is transported to the year 1850 to assist a family as they traverse the Oregon Trail. Magic Tree House fans will thoroughly enjoyed reading about Ranger and his exciting, heroic adventures. Kate Messner does a masterful job of “speaking” for Ranger. I highly recommend this series!

Pretty sure this was a battle of the books book in 4th or 5th grade. I don't remember much other than it was a fun book.

When Ranger, a squirrel-chasing golden retriever, digs up an old-fashioned first aid kit in his family's garden, he is transported back in time to Independence, Missouri (the start of the Oregon Trail) in 1850. Sam's younger sister Amelia has disappeared and Ranger's search-and-rescue training kicks in. He finds Amelia and then joins Sam and his family on their journey along the Oregon Trail. This is a fantastic time-travel adventure with a solid historical fiction component for young readers. It presents the challenges and celebrations in a realistic and age-appropriate manner. There is enough adventure to readers on the edges of their seats. After all, who wouldn't love a time-traveling golden retriever? Highly recommended for grades 2-4.
