Loved this book so much more than I thought I would. Anastasia’s character arc is so gritty, honest and powerful.
I finished it!! Wow, this was quite the journey. I have been super interested in the Romanovs (a love born from the animated Anastasia, which happened to most of us!), so this was a must read for me!! I give this book 4 stats! To me, it was a really entertaining book. It’s full of history and excitement on every page. It was just a very interesting take on an alternate history for Anastasia and her family. There was magic too, which I thought was intriguing. I am always hesitant to read fantasy historical fiction because, take the Romanovs, these are real people who died horrific deaths during a very brutal bloody time in Russian history. There were moments that made me uncomfortable just because these characters are based off real people and the magical and fantasy elements changing how these events occurred didn’t set well with me, but it was well made up for! The romance was very lovely and there were so many emotional scenes!! I just really enjoyed this!! ✨

Would have loved this book if it was half its length. Also, the romance would have been enjoyable if Damien wasn't so insufferable but alas
Ofc I'm ignoring the insane historical inaccuracies and the VERY American Disney portrayal of the Russian monarchs 😭 I'm not about to complain about all that, but it was v annoying 😭

Ok read this for a book club and I got to say, I was... surprised by this.
Bad first:
-This book is long to the point that they could genuinely cut out some parts of Anastasia's childhood and make it a bit shorter. I felt like it was dragging on for so long in the beginning. I think I got to like 60% and then something interesting happened.
-The ending for me was rushed. We spent a lot of time developing the beginning that when the action actually starts it goes by so quickly that I would just get lost and would have to re-read/re-listen.
-World building is cool but needs more details. So this is Anastasia family, but with magic they were given by the Gods. Ok so who are these Gods? Not mentioned. Ok, Anastasia's mother doesn't trust magic even though everyone has magic even a little mundane, Ok why? Well, The God's say so. But didn't they grant them magic? Do you see where I am going with this? I wanted details about the world itself why it was what it was. What rules were there for magic?
Pros:
-Holy shit the writing is amazing! I have never read a Sophie Lark book, but I think I am going to give her a shot because something about the language and way this book is written can captivate my attention.
-The heaviness of the action scenes were so much fun. It just caught my attention immediately and kept me there.
