This is a beautiful and wonderful and needed Anastasia retelling .
She definitely represents what Russia could have been . I like that Sophie didn’t shy away from the brutality her tsar Nicholas committed as ruler etc . I loved her tenacity and strength and I loved the art . While this one was a bit long for my taste it was still good

Put me in a slump. Very slow, the romance was dry and didn’t start until 60 percent, which is pretty much 500 pages in, no joke.
This book was an unexpected treat! I loved it so much.
I loved the retelling and the magic. I loved the conflict and the imagery in the storytelling. I love Sophie Lark’s writing but wasn’t sure what she’d do with fantasy and she didn’t disappoint! This illustrations added SOOOOOO much to the story…Im obsessed!! I put this book down for a minute bc it was a big boy but I wish I had finished this sooner. It was beautiful and intricate and everyone got what they deserved in the end.
Also shout out to the unsung hero - Artemis

I truly enjoyed it, although the first half was slow and not much happened, and I didn’t enjoy it that much, but it is crucial to the story so we can know and connect with Anastasia and the rest of the characters. So of course my favorite was the second part, it was full of action, love, drama, sadness, heartbreak, it was amazing. I truly loved it. Since I only liked one half more than the other, that’s why I’m giving this book 4 stars.
I need to say this tho. Spoilers ahead. The fact that the “original” Damien died was heartbreaking for me because everything he went through, from the moment he learnt that his dad died, to the moment when he finds Anastasia again, made him the man he was and that’s why his connection to Anastasia was so strong, but then she goes back in time and then this new Damien doesn’t know the heartbreak and loneliness he went through for two years. On one hand I was so happy Anastasia had another chance to be with him, but on the other hand, she was alone in knowing and living those years of darkness because “the new” Damien didn’t know about any of it. I don’t know if I even make sense, but yeah, even when I was happy for them to have a second opportunity to get their happily ever after, it was sad.
Another thing I didn’t like as much was the fact that in the first half, we only get some glimpses of the evolution of Anastasia’s and Damien’s relationship. Yeah, we read about it because Anastasia was remembering something about their encounter or whatever, but otherwise, some of their interactions were only mentioned which made their love for each other to not feel as passionate as it really was. I understand that the author wanted to show us so much about Anastasia and her family and their life and Rasputin, but at times it felt like Damien was forgotten. Maybe this is only me.
Anyway, I truly liked it. I’m so glad I finally read this book!

It’s been about 8 years since truly reading a fantasy book… and this one did NOT disappoint. It took me a few chapters to get used to the variety of characters being introduced, but once I did I was hooked. Artemis was definitely my favorite. No chapter was boring and there was never unnecessary plot. Aside from the smut, this book is a 4.7/5 and will live rent free in my mind. (I am not the biggest fan of it in a book but still think it added a nice touch.) Absolutely loved this book and loved the character development, especially with some historical connections. Amazing book to get me back into fantasy.
PS. I loved the Spotify playlist so much.
