The YA romance part was kind of boring, but the rest was a very fun fantasy respin of Anastasia. Specially loved this book’s interpretation of Rasputin, it’s kind of genious honestly

I found the premise to be really interesting, but I found the book to be kind of a drag. The first section moved quite slowly, and the second section felt kind of rushed and contrived. I also did not enjoy the illustrations in my version of the book.

Anastasia has always been my favorite story. The animated classic has stayed in my top three movies since I was six, and I have seen the Broadway musical three times. I cannot believe I haven't read this book until now.

I know Sophie Lark was inspired by the original movie but she truly made it her own and told the story in a unique new way. The magic, the romance, the politics, the villains, everything about this drew me in and kept me wanting more.

I loved the illustrations, the inclusion of the music throughout the book, and the elements of the story that she kept, like the music box and Rasputin's bat (we know his name is Bartok in our hearts); everything was just so well done.

I'm definitely gonna have a bit of a hangover after this one, but it was worth it.

This book took me SO long to get through. 3.5 stars rounded up. I really liked it but I felt like it was sold as a romantasy and it definitely wasn’t that. I’m all for slow burn they barely even had any interactions until like half way through the book.

I went back and forth with this review. I love this author, and I adore her writing style. I have mad love for how well she researches her books, the culture, and historical accuracy of her books. This book in that sense were held to those standards. I believe for a historical fiction novel this book would be more interesting than most historical fictions I've read, but the problem is I don't really care for historical fiction in general. The book is labeled as a dark fantasy, and I think the world building was amazing in the historical aspects of the book, but magic and fantasy could have been a bit more thrilling. Basically, this book was really hard to get into for me personally because the romance took a backseat for the majority of the book and only developed at the end. I live for the romance in most of my book choices, so I was a little disappointed. I found myself just intrigued enough with the historical background of the Romanov's, Anastasia's childhood, and the conspiracy theories surrounding her story to make it through the book. I think it's a phenomenal historical fiction, and I can see this book doing well in bigger retail stores, but it wasn't for me.

Read if you enjoy the original Anastasia Romanov story, if you love historical fiction, if you like dark fantasy, and a sweet childhood romance that takes more of a backseat to the storyline.
