I had really high hopes for The Bone Witch but was really disappointed with how it turned out. I enjoyed the magic aspect of it, but I felt like there wasn't enough of it in the book. I never really felt like Tea and her sisters were actually witches more like Courtesans who dabbled in magic. I didn't really feel like Tea had much of any personality. Her point of view was dull to read from. Places, where she could have had some emotion, were parts in the story where she seemed to black out and not remember. The timeline was incredibly convoluted and hard to read. I felt like everything was working to the middle of the story instead of the end, and then we never actually got to that middle of the story. I don't have much interest in reading the 2nd book when it comes out.

Very slow paced

There was literally nothing fun going on. I did hope there will be until the end, but it was just predictable bits and pieces. I will not be continuing the series, I like more action packed in a book.

I really like the magic system in this world however I didn't understand why the Asha were there to entertain people. Also I could have done without all the outfit descriptions, I don't really care what they were wearing, I want to know about the character and thier magic abilities.

Overall I did really like the book, and I will read the rest in the series. The ending threw me off because I didn't expect them to be in love.

Let’s start with how gorgeous the book cover is! There’s something beautiful in the purple hue, the calmness in the lone girl sitting by herself, and the intricacies of the swirls that frames the whole picture. And then there’s the ever ominous title, The Bone Witch. When I first saw the cover, I made it my mission to try and get my hands on this book, and it was clearly not disappointing, though not quite like what I expected when I first saw the book.

Clearly the book moves oh so very slow to my liking. I get that with series, the first book is all about world and characters building, but surely I don’t have a need to know every single thing that the characters are eating and/or drinking, and the many countless details that I chose to skip through. I had a hard time reading this book in its first chapters because I couldn’t get my head around Tea as the main character of the story. There’s an air about young Tea that I don’t quite enjoy, but reading the older Tea sharing her story to the Bard is definitely interesting.

I have to say that it took me halfway through the book to actually got my grip and actually starts to enjoy the story. I am also thankful that though there is, of course, still a somewhat potentially a love triangle situation going on, it wasn’t dwell upon. Not that I have anything against love stories in a book, it’s just that for once I want a book that doesn’t force a love trope in a grander scheme of the story, yanno?

To be completely honest, I don’t get why this book ran for about 400 pages and there’s nothing big happening. Sure, there was that battle where Tea got inside the mind of the beast that helps here figure out who is the bad guy all along, but after so many pages unfurl and only to have the battle happening for maybe three or so chapters is quite a bummer. What as wasted hundreds or so pages before it. But, by the time the book ends, I can’t lie for I am hook line and sinker. I am dying to read the next book, I need to know how and why Tea was exiled? I’m curious to see more character development from Tea and Fox.

I just hope that the second will get straight to the point, now that we all get the gist about the world, the characters, and the the whole being an asha thing.

An interesting story that I definitely was not expecting.

Tea is way more than I expected and I love the direction the entire story is taking. It's been a long time since I've read dark fantasy and it's a delightful read. Tea's story starts off conventional enough by fantasy standards - girls finds herself in possession of the dark arts and is scorned by her community, she's taken away to be trained by someone else just like her. She makes friends and starts falling in love. At least these are the regular everyday ya fantasy scenes but it is interspersed with the future and Tea is a powerful witch hellbent on vengeance.

Can't wait to start book 2.

I liked the writing style and how the book switched between past and present, kind of like in The Kingkiller Chronicles where the story is actually being told by the main character from the present to someone else.

There were some plot twists towards the end that were really good (I was shook) and then some that felt pretty off and didn't really make sense to me. Generally I also felt like there were too many plot points that often got left aside for a while even though they were said to be really important. I think there were just too many things going on that didn't really have enough space and it would have been better if it were reduced a bit.
