Wasn’t my favorite adventure/nature memoir. Not sure wasn’t really jiving with me. Maybe I didn’t quite connect with the dad’s POV. It wasn’t a bad book at all but I found I didn’t care about what came next and life is too short to finish a book that’s only ok to me

Loved this book! It felt as though I had taken the trip with them!

I liked this book up until the canoe trip portion. I understand it's non-fiction, but the author wrote in somewhat technical terms that I didn't really understand as a "non-canoer". Because I couldn't follow each little detail, it made that portion of the book really dull. I was also irritated at the author's unintentional portrayal of his daughter. He talks about writing in his "journal", but whenever it's his daughter, she's writing in her "diary". I don't know why that stuck out to me but it irked the feminist in me. He did finally refer to it as her "journal" and "notebook" once each towards the end. Random detail, but it bothered me.

Loved the descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness, liked or at least felt some connection to the evolving father-teenage daughter relationship. But at times the narrative dragged or preached. An OK book to listen to.

A Wisconsin man takes his teenage daughter to Alaska for three adventures: to build a cabin in the bush in late summer, learn how to hunt/trap in the dead of winter, and go on a river trip

One of the best Alaska adventure books I've ever read. (High praise from this Alaskan!)
