I have been meaning to read Jason Reynolds for some time, and this was a good book to start with. I loved how the story balanced the everyday lighthearted and serious truths for each of the characters. I love good middle-grade writing, and this book delivers packing tenderness, wisdom, and an invitation for growth.

Ahhh, this book! I love this book. I want to recommend it to every kid. It’s short and sweet and perfect for lower middle graders. Castle Cranshaw (aka Ghost) doesn’t have an easy life. He struggles with past trauma involving his father and violence, he gets teased at school because of the clothes he wears and the neighborhood he lives in, but he finds purpose and friendship when he sort of accidentally joins a track team.

I loved this found family story. I think it’s a great one to introduce compassion, complex friendships, and difficult family issues to kids in a gentle way. I want more time with the characters on this track team so I can’t wait to pick up the next in the series.
