I had to read this for my college class, and even though it wasnt a book I would typically reach for as it is middle grade. I think it is a very important book for its demographic. It tackles trauma in a form I think middle schoolers can understand, and even relate to. Castle as a character is a compelling one to follow as he grows a lot throughout the story, I cant wait to see what happens next with our Newbies of The Defenders.

Looking forward to reading the others books in the series.

Ahhh, this book! I love this book. I want to recommend it to every kid. It’s short and sweet and perfect for lower middle graders. Castle Cranshaw (aka Ghost) doesn’t have an easy life. He struggles with past trauma involving his father and violence, he gets teased at school because of the clothes he wears and the neighborhood he lives in, but he finds purpose and friendship when he sort of accidentally joins a track team.

I loved this found family story. I think it’s a great one to introduce compassion, complex friendships, and difficult family issues to kids in a gentle way. I want more time with the characters on this track team so I can’t wait to pick up the next in the series.
