The voice in this book is so clear and distinct that exposition is barely necessary. Castle Cranshaw discovered he could run on one terrible night. When he happens upon a track team, he finds a purpose to running and a group to belong to. This is the first in a series about this track team, and I look forward to reading more about the characters we were introduced to. A lot of heavy, important topics were handled deftly and naturally. I couldn't help but compare it to Crossover, though, and I don't think this has the same universal appeal.

Jason Reynolds is a gem. This is the second book of his that I've read, and I've loved both. One thing I really admire about this book in particular is how well he captures the voice of a young kid. Sometimes when an adult writes from the first person perspective of a kid, it can feel a little....off. You may find yourself thinking, "No kid talks like that." That's definitely not the case here. Ghost was such a great, believable character. Definitely recommend.

I really enjoyed this book and it was definetley a 5 star title! However, it did cover some pretty heavy topics like drugs x shooting. If you are a sensitive reader then make sure to take that into consideration.

This book was so perfect!!! I got teary-eyed at the ending. I wish I had representation like this as a child.

While the plot is something we've seen before, the characters make this book sing. I know these kids. I've had them in my class. The supporting cast is so fully fleshed out in their limited screen time that I want to read the sequels to get the chance to dive more deeply into who they are and what makes them tick.

Feels like Ghost is talking to you throughout the entire book. A delightful read.

Love this one! Fast paced, simple storyline with good characters and not as predictable as you would think. Great audiobook reader. Again, probably not the best listen for a five year old (I am finding it very hard to find good audio books by POC for 5-8 age range!). I actually think he got a lot out of the tough themes though and I think the stealing storyline made an impact. Ghost’s mom seeing Ghost all together had him grinning ear to ear. I didn’t know how he would take the ambiguity in the ending but he was not let down a bit. Looking forward to the rest of the books in this series.
