In previous books Stefan was the villain, making moves in the racing world. However it always seemed like there was more to him, something driving him. In the Front Runner you get to see the many layers of Stefan, and it runs deep.

Mira is the veterinarian to the Gold Rush Ranch, she has also created a friendship with the owner Vaughn and his wife Billie. When tragedy strikes one of their horses they find themselves needing a mama horse who can nurse it to health. When Stefan calls Mira for a horse in need, the solution they need comes out of a tragedy.

Mira strikes a deal with Stefan even though Stefan and the Gold Rush Ranch are at odds with each other, but the horses come first. While Mira has to agree to three dates with Stefan and the horses to be kept on his ranch.

Seeing the way that Stefan cares for the horses is what compels Mira to agree. Spending so much time at his ranch while seeing how the horses take to each other gives them a lot of time to get to know each other. As Stefan starts to open up about his past, Mira sees how much pain he has endured, the promises he has made and the determination in him to make his ranch a success.

The broken boy in him doesn't allow himself to think he can ever have someone important into his life, but something inside him is drawn to Mira and her sweet kind nature. He craves that love, even if he doesn't think he deserves it, or will find it.

"You missed me?" His eyes are soft, wide - uncertain almost. A look I don't see on him often. And something about that look undoes me a little.

Their witty banter made me laugh, Stefan's journey made me teary, and the stunning descriptions of the ranch embraced me in a cocoon of warm feelings. I wanted nothing more than for them to have their happily ever after and Elsie did not disappoint!

Thank you Elsie for the ARC copy for review, all opinions are my own and given freely.
