A curious mystery. My favorite character was murdered so that derailed me quite a bit but I wanted to find out what happened to the environmental study, the egg collectors, the mine, the proposed quarry. I'm not really sure, a handful of loose ends, the murders seemed sadly happenstance and the psychotic nature of a few characters treating others with a lack of humanity disturbed me.

It was well written but brought me distress without purpose or learning so I wouldn't recommend even though I'm rating it highly for the interesting characters, good writing, and mystery..too many loose ends. Maybe I missed some details. Left feeling meh. I listened to it on audio book and re listened to the end 3 times and I'm still uncertain.

audiobook; intricate story about several connecting murders; introduces DI Vera Stanhope; will do next in series in book form - too many details for audiobook

This proved to be quite an odd read. It felt like Cleeves disliked her characters... they certainly seemed to be a disagreeable cast of characters.

Still, I am willing to give this series another shot.

Perhaps I made the mistake of reading this after watching the show, because I just did not like the majority of the book. Vera doesn't appear as a speaking character until the halfway point and before that we have to suffer through a whole POV of the most aggravating homewrecker in the world. I would have actually preferred it if Vera hadn't shown up at all. Rachel and her mother were doing a pretty satisfying job of investigating and I would have been okay with seeing that through. Not the Vera book to start with, although I'll say it was a more rounded story than the adapted version for the show. Pretty solidly mediocre.
