The Durants get better with each book. I think as the project went along they found their style. I also think that was they focused on smaller time periods which are closer in our social memory and have a greater abundance of sources, it gives them the ability to delve deeper. I also enjoyed it more because it is French history which I studied quite a bit in college and beyond.

The end of this had an envoi that indicated it was the last book, but it's not! Next up: the French Revolution and Napoleon.

It's still amazing as it continues on, the second last volume speaking about the enlightenment and the rest of Europe. It still managed to entertain me about a lot of things that I didn't know.
