Oh my god this book is probably one of my new favorites. Usually I'm the kind of person who reads a quick meet cute rom-com but this book intrigued me when I saw it on the banned books table at Barnes and Noble, and sucked me in deeper when I saw it was in a diary format. There's something so much more intimate about it being a diary that also left an air of mystery since there were things being left out and background information we weren't told about. Despite the ending of this book, I love the message it has and the power of the story. It was a realistic ending and the main character's multiple relapses with drug abuse just shows that this isn't a quick detour on her road to happiness, it consumed her life. From the lack of updates in the journal to the shorter entries, this book did such a heartbreaking but breathtaking job of depicting drug addition in teens.

As a book this wasn't great, but when you take into account the history and mythos surrounding it it's quite intriguing.

Despite the drug consumption and abuse - which has been largely contested in this "true account" - this is a heartbreaking and poignant narrative surrounding mental health of teenagers and specifically teenage girls. This resonates deeply as a coming-of-age story.
I wish Alice was able to live.

I re-read this book to follow along with the You’re Wrong About book club and in anticipation of Unmask Alice.

Honestly the only rational reason to read this book is out of nostalgia or academic interest. It is not a real diary, it does not have any information or insights into the subject matter, and it’s incredibly stigmatizing to actual drug users. It is, however, decently written and relatively short, so it’ll be a quick read if you’ve got some reason for doing so.

The text is not an authentic text. It is written by someone who has no idea what real addiction looks like.

I have to give this book such respect. It’s somebodies diary, it’s somebodies life. I feel I have no choice to go read it with respect, sympathy, and give it 5 stars.
