A stream of consciousness masterpiece, Mind of Winter is written through the warped perception of a rapidly derailing Holly, who carries immense loss and grief with her. Kasischke builds the tension up high for a cathartic end, when the mind fortress Holly has built to keep herself safe from the horrors of reality comes crashing down.
Moderate: Suicide, Cancer, Child death, Death, and Death of parent
Minor: Alcoholism

Too long. Way too long. This could have been a good short story, but it stretches out forever.
Graphic: Ableism, Blood, Cancer, Child abuse, Child death, Confinement, Death, Dementia, Infertility, Medical content, Mental illness, and Panic attacks/disorders
Moderate: Alcoholism

This story of a woman alone with her daughter during a Christmas Day blizzard would have made for an excellent short format horror story. Instead it is dragged out to novel length unnecessarily. By the end I disliked the book so much that even the terrific twist/reveal and ending couldn't save it. If only we'd gotten there sooner.
Moderate: Suicide, Terminal illness, Cancer, Death, Medical content, Medical trauma, Child death, and Chronic illness
Minor: Addiction, Alcoholism, Animal death, and Infertility
