Hm. Well. That was a surprise.
I thought it’d be depressing and hard to get through. It wasn’t. Although it had patches that were tragic, it wasn’t allll about tragedy.
I thought it’d be a fact-based memoir mixed with flowery poetic asides and quotable bites. It was far more narrative and story-focused than that.
I thought it’d be trying to pull my heartstrings to make a point. It made the point better with its frank “this is just the way it was, this is just what we did” point of view. She didn’t need melodrama to make me feel.
I thought I’d be blown away by the poetic frilliness of the words. To me, the words, while often beautiful, were overly formal and even awkward at times.
I’m rating this pretty well what I expected to rate it, but for entirely different reasons than I expected.
