It was dark, but on the other hand there was the Great Catsby
This is the sad story of Magnus' encouter with Valentine's Circle.
The story was promising at first but it wasn't that captivating. I have hoped for a far more entertaining story.
5 stars. I WANTED TO SEE THIS SO BAD.
valentine is a monster.
we see the first moment Luke realises that.
we see what a disgrace Stephen is to the Herondale name.
also, BABY CLARY.
THAT LITTLE REDHEADED SCRAP.
TESSA HOLDING A BABY.
BYE.

4.5 Stars
The ninth story takes place in the 1990s and is called "The Last Stand of the New York Institute." This book deals with Magnus' encounters with the Circle members.
I liked this story a lot. I believe this one is my favorite so far. This story gave background to the Circle. I also really liked reading about Magnus' encounters with the Circle members. I also liked how it had references to the series which made it interesting to read. I enjoyed the second part of the story when Jocelyn meets Tessa along with Magnus and it showed Magnus' side of the story. I also really enjoyed getting the background information and watching Magnus'character develop over the course of the story.

***5 out of 5 stars***
If i could give this 10 stars i surely would! I have a couple of favorite chronicles in this set of 9 so far but this one was beyond amazing! if you havent read any of them this one would be definitely one to read!
**************SPOILER ZONE***********
the first part of this chronicle took me in by surprise because it was not what I thought I was going to find. We had heard about how Valentine had lost some of his faith on Luke's convictions with the circle's mission and purpose but of course it was a backstory within the main story in TMI, here we finally get to see part of the inner working of the circle and how ugly these kids were, blinded by following Valentine, who was clearly deranged and just completely mad and full of hate. We see who Luke really was even then and the exact moment when Valentine decides what his fate will be and how we see all this through Magnus realizations when assesing the aftermath of the bloodbath at the warehouse where the Circle eliminate the Whitelaws... the exchange between Magnus and Maryse!!! indirectly discussing Alec... OMG my Malec feels!! The very sad realization Magnus has when he talks to Stephen Herondale and though he reminds him of those he once loved and still loves, it hurts him to see the hate in him.
Finally we get to see the dark past between Maryse, Robert and Magnus and the reason why he dislikes them so much, its surreal to think that after they had all been involved in that battle not 20 years later he would be dating their son!
And then as if the battle of 1989 was not enough to bring all this feels and realizations, we fast forward to 1989!! Just seeing the year almost made me scream!
And then all my hopes came true, there she was! Tessa, in a tshirt and sweatpants watching TV with Magnus, and Magnus reminscing of the love and loyalty Tessa had for Will and well i was bawling...
Jocelyn brings Clary and well the rest was a series of events that I was only able to assume when reading TMI but now were written and being confirmed... Fray being a mix of Fairchild and Gray in honor of Jocely's family and Tessa's good friendship with her ancestors (more tears...)
The feels are just toooooooooooo much! The pain Tessa feels thinking that hers and Will's family ended with Stephen fighting against everything they believed and fought for and hating her kind (my heart literally ached!) and the confirmation that it was her and Jem who performed the Shadowhunter ritual on Clary ..... Aaaaahhh!!!! so many feels, so many answers!!! I wished it never end as I was reading! It was truly brilliant!!

This one was another harder one to read of the collection. I mean, we know there were bad Shadowhunters, and that the Circle did pretty awful things. But it was still not an easy story!
*First Read February 26th, 2018*
I thought this novella was going to be about the events in The Mortal Instruments, but it was set around the time of the Circle, and yeah, what Jace's dad did was pretty horrible!
