I'm not normally a gamelit reader; but H.P. Holo is a local author my wife and I originally found at a local convention, and we'd tried and quite liked The Wizard's Way. So after my wife devoured this series, I figured I'd give it a shot.

To my enormous surpriseā€”I loved it. The gamelit aspects (and especially the Monster Hunter influences) are front-and-center, but nothing feels like a description of a game being played. The world of the Dazzling Skies has the wild, unpredictable authenticity of reality, and the complex society hinted at throughout made me hope to see more of the Monstrous and Wondrous Continents in the next two books. But it's the characters that stand out: They're exactly as imaginative and varied as the setting promises, and delightfully comic without existing wholly for comedic purposes.

Also, they're all incredibly funny, and my wife and I will be quoting them at length to each other for months to come.

All in all it's a wonderful, light read, and made me genuinely happy to try something new.
