Went into my brother's room looking for a quick book to read and chose this one.
When I first read the blurb, I wasn't internally sure how I felt about the story going into it, so I left the book overnight and then sat down this morning and read it.
I did feel sorry for Danny because he was pretty much the kid who was caught in the middle of a hard situation. Same with Andy. To start with I didn't like Luke's character that much, but when I thought about his situation of his parent's splitting up and this new guy moving in, his attitude was a little more understandable. When Sarah is introduced to us, I kinda already guessed both by the way she was acting and the title of the book that she had dared her brother to do something.
The way the parents were handling the situation and making assumptions like Sarah's mum calling Danny's mum a manic and Danny's father just refusing to allow Sarah and Danny to talk, wasn't the best way. Especially when the police have evidence to say Danny's mum hitting Andy was an accident. Well, yes, probably the fear of your child not waking up from a coma was playing into the parents' actions, it still wasn't right. I did understand why his mum felt the way she did but possibly missing her son's birthday on purpose, not the greatest choice.
When Danny ran away, from what we see in his perspective, I guess it was a little justified, I don't know. Again not the greatest choice, he could have made. Spending his money all in one day wasn't the smartest move either. The fact that Pete, the most absence side-character, is the one who finds him and takes Danny to the hospital is kinda bittersweet.
I'm happy that Andy woke up, I hope Sarah told her parents about her daring her brother, and I'm glad that Danny, Luke and Sarah became friends even despite their parents disapproval.
