What raw, evocative prose. Absolutely necessary for everyone to have read.

This book seems purposefully disorienting. Each new chapter is from a different perspective, sometimes a different time, a different way of storytelling, different problems at the core. If you hold out they get tied together again in the epilogue but it is a challenge to read through and figure everything out for yourself. I don't think the book intends to open old wounds for all the people that were affected by the past acts of the militia, but rather show that these wounds never healed anyways and history needs to be remembered, especially if it's hard, uncomfortable or in this case traumatic and deadly. It also shows the injustice of some systems, the power and resource imbalance when states feel threatened by well meaning people who may have means for violence, they don't even need conviction. It's unsurprising but still absolutely awful some leaders would (let their people) do such horrific things to anyone that scares them a bit. The motto is 'shoot now, never ask questions.'
