I really feel like Goodreads needs a 10-star system. This is very well done, both in terms of style and plot, but it's not near and dear to my heart as, say, Infernal Devices. Also love the protagonist's name, haha!

Less than 10 pages into this book and I was undeniably and irrevocably in love with V.E Schwab's writing. I found it fitting that my first V.E Schwab book be her debut novel and I am so happy I picked up this book because of its's raven sprayed edges. I was immersed in a world of mystery and witches and moors and wind and crows, all through Schwab's lush writing and magic woven words. Her writing draws you into a story slowly and gently and suddenly you find yourself fully immersed in the world she has created. I truly enjoyed this book in all aspects; plot, characters, themes and overlaying message and if this is merely her debut novel I cannot wait to pick up the rest of her books as her writing evolves.

Thoroughly bored, seemed like it was trying to be fairytale esque and flowery and I was not interested in the slightest. It was all vibes little plot and none of it was good.

I liked this book but I think it's obvious that it was the first book she ever published. Her later works are stronger and have better pacing, but the writing is still excellent and the story very compelling. For those who are fans of her other books, I would absolutely recommend this novel, but if you haven't read any of her work before, I'd recommend starting with A Darker Shade of Magic or The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. With that said, I did stay up until 2 am to finish the book so I clearly really liked it.
