Watching a bunch of fading landed gentry behaving badly has a kind of vicious Real Housewives feel to it which could be fun at times. These people could not bear to let anyone else be happy and were constantly cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

However, it's kind of blunted a bit by the distance the literary device used to tell gives it (some parts are like Lockwood relating a letter written by Cathy as narrated to him by Ellen) and the ending sort of runs out of steam.

I have been intimidated by books from the 19th century as I was concerned I could not understand the lingo, the slang, etc. However at times wordy and using old slang Wuthering Heights is incredibly easy to read. It helped to have the glossary in the back especially for the cleverly written Northern dialect. The story is gripping and I love that it is told from Mrs Dean as we may never know her bias of those involved.

What I understood from the culture around this story was that it was one of love, and romance. Well I believe those who created movies, songs, etc of this novel's contents were incredibly amiss in doing so and therefore misrepresent this story in it's entirety.

If you are nervous about 19th century novels like I was, I urge you to give this one a shot as it is absolutely an incredible story that I wish I had given a chance to sooner.

None of the characters are likable but the book is so engrossing. It's like watching a train wreck. It's a great story about how cycles of abuse don't stop till someone decides to be better.

I read this book in high school and decided to reread after discovering Kate Bush's song. It is upsetting a lot of people consider it to be a great romance, the relationship is obviously unhealthy.

Added incest as a content warning bc first cousins end up marrying in the end, unfortunately not uncommon for England in this time period.

How badly can people hurt each other? So badly!! And everyone's sad!! Do they learn from their mistakes? Absolutely not! It's horrific and it stays with you!

I'm sorry but I don't get it- why is this book good?
They just bully and abuse each other, mostly for no reasonable reason!
Reading this was just giving me anxiety and making me uncomfortable!
Even though I didn't really enjoy reading this book, I still got through it quite quickly which says something about the writing and/or translation, so good job there!

Amazing. It’s has the same vibe as twilight. Total chaos. Every character is a horrible person doing chaotic things and I love it.

i thought this story was going to be something else and was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn’t. there’s an overarching tone of misery that’s follows this book, which is one reason it is so excellent. everyone speaks ill to everyone, Heathcliff above all, and it’s set (mainly) between two houses which are secluded away from the main town. typically, unpleasant characters would annoy me but the intention of them being unpleasant adds so much to the atmosphere, which is the main reason i decided to read this book. warning to future readers. if you don’t like reading about rich people or misery, this is not the book for you.
