Akwaeke Emezi, I will find you one day. One day, I will find you. I will drop to my knees. And I will ask for your hand in marriage.

They peeled my scalp back, cracked my skull open, and wrote exactly what's going on in my brain. What the heck Akwaeke Emezi my future spouse. How dare you. I love you. I guess I'm an ogbanje? Is it appropriative of me to say that even though I know my ancestry comes from Nigeria I'm just not sure which people group? Anyway anyway. I am her and they is me and I am we. Amazing. I'm so glad I chose to pock this up this month. THIS IS Black history NOW !!!

a SOLID 5/5 — i got chills reading it. the concept of having “multiple people inside of you” really resonated with me — though i don’t relate to the latter, i’ve definitely experienced a lot of the emotions displayed within the book.

the writing is powerful and evocative, and i think i’m going to struggle to find something better written than this.

i’ll conclude this with this thought: the really scary parts of this aren’t what happens to ada (those are clearly EXTREMELY depressing and deserve TWs in their own right) but rather ada’s developing and deteriorating psychology.

terrifying. i’ll be hard-pressed to find a psychological thriller better done than this.

it's definitely interesting but i didn't really get that much from the book other than an intriguing concept and nice quotes. sometimes that it is enough, but it wasn't the case for me here.

Freshwater is beautifully written and the audiobook is read by the author. This is the third Emezi book that I have switched over to audiobook because they create characters with strong Nigerian voices that I don't feel comfortable narrating in my head. Besides this book, Pet and Bitter were also great audiobooks, read by people other than the author. All three audiobooks increased my enjoyment and Emezi's wordcraft is magical.

The story is a little challenging in how the splintered voices speak and this is the best DID narrative I know. Also the sharing of trans moments was quite honest and lovely too. I would recommend checking the content warnings though because parts of this book are intense.
