Another hit!

Well can I just say I am so in love with this series!? It has everything I look for in a great book series. I'm 2 for 2. My heart was broken for Flint and then healed by the end. I'm so so glad I stumbled onto this series. I can not wait for Quarry's book. I think that one will be the most emotional. Thank you Aly Martinez for creating this genius.

A bit too much smut for my tastes. Probably Aly Martinez’s smuttiest book.

Fighting Shadows is the second book in the On The Ropes series by Aly Martinez. This book can be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading Fighting Silence first. In Fighting Silence you get to know not only Till and Eliza's story, but it also really sets up Flint's story for Fighting Shadows. This is one series that while they are standalones, I think it gives the reader full enjoyment to read these in order in my opinion.

After saving the life of the woman he loved but couldn't have, Flint Page was left paralyzed and living in a wheelchair. Flint knew his life changed when he saved Eliza's, and he also knew that he couldn't continue to see her with his brother everyday. In order to escape his misery, he left his family behind and decided to go to college. He knew he needed a clean break to have a shot at becoming himself again rather than the bitter person he had turned into. Then Flint met Ash Mabie, and everything began to change. As Flint and Ash grew closer, he began to really live again. But falling for the girl who has a tendency of running will force Flint to fight his past as well as fight for his future with Ash.

I knew this one was going to be rough at times after reading Fighting Silence. Flint had experienced a lot of really tough things, and I felt like his heart couldn't withstand much else. So when I saw him at the beginning of this book my heart absolutely broke for him. He was angry and bitter, but he was clearly hurting and to go it all alone really got to me. Then he met Ash, and things started to turn around. I knew that it wouldn't be that simple though, and their relationship proved to be far from easy. But Flint deserved happiness so much, and I knew that he could have that with Ash. These two were great for each other, and the more I saw them together the more I knew they had to wind up together. Ash was hard for me to warm up to, and I will admit that she really made me angry a few times in this book. But growing up as she did, I really believed that she was just trying to protect herself and she didn't know how to handle things the best. I believe that she really loved Flint though, and that went a long way for me. These two had such a strong connection and chemistry, and I think that with everything that they had each been through they just weren't prepared for what they found at such a young age.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. It frustrated me at times and broke my heart at others, but it was a book that I felt emotionally invested in right from the start. I loved getting to see more of Till and Eliza, and I really loved their book. But there was something really special about Flint and Ash, and I hadn't expected to feel as much for them as I had with Till and Eliza. I was so wrong, and I think that Aly Martinez did a great job of showing that these characters were unique and different, and she made them impossible not to fall for. I can honestly say that I am dying to get Q's book though. I have a feeling his might be the most emotional story of them all, and I cannot wait to see what is in store for him. I would recommend this book if you are an Aly Martinez fan, and if you aren't a fan yet, I think that this series is definitely a good place to start!

I'm so glad that I continued with this series!

Fighting Shadows is the second book of the On the Ropes series. This story follows Ash and Flint and their relationship over 6 years. Flint is obviously a hard ass on the outside.. but once you get to know him deep down.. well he's a big ole softy. Then there's Ash who is freaking hilarious. I loved her since the beginning all the way to the end. Their chemistry also gave me life because it was on fire!

One thing I didn't expect out of the book were all those god damn twists! I was hooked on this series from the first book.. and now I'm obsessed! I need the third book ASAP!

I couldn’t get into the wrecked and ruined series by Aly Martinez but I love this series. Odd sometimes how you can like one thing but not another. I also thought that Ms. Martinez couldn’t do better than “Fighting Silence” bloody glad I am wrong. Unfortunately time flies when you read a good book. 5 learning to trust stars.

Opening line:

In exchange for a permanent place to live…in. A. Homeless. Shelter. I looked away, because it was the truth. A truth I hated.

Three. Fucking. Years, Ash. You took something that belonged to me. And I want her back.
My breath hitched. I waited three years to hear those words. If only I could trust them.

3 years earlier

How I wanted to dislike Flint and I tried so hard I really did but I couldn’t. I adored him. Although he was grumpy and an arse. It didn’t matter. So I mentioned that he was an arse right? Now, why Flint would you do that?

He is bitter, cynical and taking a path that will lead to self-destruction because Clay Page was the reason he was recovering from a bullet in the back. He caught a bullet to save Eliza. Flint has been in love with Eliza ever since he was twelve. He declares his love when he is in a state of oblivion in the hospital and every day he watches the woman he loves with his brother. He moves out as he can’t take the pain any longer.

Problems don’t disappear, words of wisdom from Slate

“Problems don’t need a map. They’ll follow you everywhere. You can’t hide forever Flint.”

Ash Mabie was dealt a pretty shit hand in life. Her father brought her up to be a con artist, a pick pocket and a thief. They have moved around so much that she has never experienced normal. But she has seen the positive in it all.

God, I would have killed to go to an actual school, with actual kids my age. I’d heard that teenage girls were bitches, but I was willing to take the chance. They couldn’t be all that bad. I was pretty freaking awesome. Surely there were others like me.

But she has stayed true to herself and has a quirky, fun and positive outlook on life. She has a heart of gold. But she is evasive and telling the truth. Ash is quirky, goofy, insane and a riot. Flint does things he usually wouldn’t do. He finally finds his smile around Ash again. He begins to feel and isn’t numb.

“I’d known Ash Mabie for exactly two hours, but I was stunned into silence by the vulnerability on her creamy white face. It shouldn’t haven’t been there. Mainly because it ruined any other smile that would be there.

So I was wondering how Ash and Flint were going to meet, initially through Quarry because his piece of a shit Mum suddenly wanted him back. Bitch. She was married to Ash’s father.

Ash literally barges into Flint’s life. There is something about him that appeals to her. Especially as she went to meet her homeless friends Max and Donna. Even in a wheelchair he tries to save her. He is so caught up in the shadows that he forgets the who casts it.

I love how the author gives the H/h something special in the book something just for them. In the first book it was a window that they shared but in this book it was a patch of weeds that became their space. Flint’s gesture of transporting the weeds was so sweet. Ms. Martinez makes me feel what the characters are feeling. And makes me like them although I don’t want to.

Tell the girl that you building something that breaks her heart. Cruel, really cruel. Although they continue it all comes to a grinding halt and explodes in their faces. Flint finds out that Ash is sixteen and flips. He is really judgmental.

Sixteen year olds belong with their parents. Giggle in homeroom and trying to score with the high school quarterback. Sheesh what school did he go to?

Can you fall in love in a month? Why, yes I think you really can. Ash wants to fight for them

“Because I’d give anything to be tied down to you. Wheelchair or not. Walking or not. Just You.

What does the douchecanoe, He gets insulting. Git.

Flint with the help of Till starts looking for her. He is devastated at the mistake that he made.

I unconsciously search for her face. Every blonde I passed and every laugh I heard was always her. It was never her.”

They get it together with ups and downs.

The ending with Quarry broke my fucking heart.

I was given an ARC for my honest review.

Aly Martinez is one of my absolute favorite authors. I have been waiting for Fighting Shadows to release ever since I finished Fighting Silence. I fell in love with the Page boys and I am so excited to see their stories continue.
I was drawn to Flynn from the moment he was introduced in FS. He was the cocky kid who, like Till, was forced to grow up at an early age. Unfortunately for him, he was struck with tragedy. He suffered heartbreak, love, compassion, anger, hatred.. every emotion you could think of.
When he meets Ash, he definitely gets more than he bargins for. She is young, smart, funny, and beautiful. The two of them together make an incredible love story!!
I didn't want to put the book down!!!!!! I can't wait to read the next book!!! I'm ready for more Q!!!

OKAY FOLKS IT'S OFFICIAL I AM OFF MY ROCKER. I am a grad student and yet I read this book in a day. After finishing the first book in the series earlier today. Granted there was a cliff hanger in the first book... but I digress.

This story follows Ash and Flint and their relationship over about a 6 year span (much like the first one, shocker). We still have the lovely familial aspects to this book, but not as much as you might expect given the importance of family in the first book.

But lemme tell ya, this book wasn't at all a cheap retelling of the first book. Flint is stony (HAH) and a little cold, with a mushy center. Ash is laugh out loud funny with a zest for life that isn't cheesy or cringey. And the chemistry was very palpable between the two characters, even more so than the couple in the first book.

AND. THE. TWISTS. Y'all. There were so many that I wasn't expecting. They weren't over the top or unbelievable either. But that one at the end was stone. fucking. cold.

Annnnnd now I have to go and pick up the third book and immediately devour it. Brb, prolly see y'all same place & time tomorrow with a third review.
