A Friend in the Dark is a digital romance gone wrong. If you’ve never questioned online dating, then this book will make you do just that.

Eden is going through it! She’s recently separated from her high school sweetheart husband with a daughter who has gone off to college and blames her for everything bad in their lives. On her birthday while alone and drinking, Eden connects with Justin Ward, a former high school “friend” that she had a huge crush on, and they begin an online relationship. Things get really weird when he begins mentioning things that she never told him and creepy things begin happening in her life. She has no clue what is going on but she’s quickly forced to face her decisions and unravel the real story of who Justin Ward is.

I'm not going to lie, I spent a good portion of this book annoyed with Eden but at the same time, I understood where she was coming from. Her life was imploding and she simply wanted to feel wanted and Justin provided that for her. A Friend in the Dark is a fast paced bingeable thriller that's slightly over-the-top but creepy and full of suspense. If you like Frieda McFadden, you’ll like this book.

This “thriller” (which had a lot of dark romance elements to it) missed the mark for me. Eden & Dave, newly empty-nesters, decide to separate after dropping their daughter off at college. Navigating life on her own, Eden reignites an old flame with a crush from college, who may not have her best interests at heart. This was twisty and thankfully not overly long, but the writing felt underdeveloped to me and the characters were a little dumb. I read it as part of Amazon’s first reads program, so at least I didn’t spend any money on it!

This was a wild ride from start to finish! Huge thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for the eARC. This book lured me with its messy, unbelievable plot and characters making questionable decisions left and right. I guess that’s what makes a good thriller? Despite the chaos, I couldn't put it down, and I'm impressed with how the author managed to tie up all the loose ends by the end. The fast-paced nature of the story meant there wasn't much room for character development, but for a quick, suspenseful read, it hit the spot. I must admit, some of the dialogues between characters had me cringing. If you're in the mood for a twisty-turny thriller that'll keep you guessing until the end, give it a try.

This was a nice and quick listen while at work, and it helped pass the time quickly.

This book was interesting, because it brings up the point that in this day and age, we truly don't know who we are talking to on the internet. It could be something non-nefarious as just talking with friends, or more on the darker side like this book took.

I will say, I did not see the twist that was coming in parts 2 or 3, but they were fantastic, and helped craft the story into what it was.
