A great beginning
Good plot, some good characterisation and well written. Interesting mix of mundane and fantasy.
Some loose ends but not enough to lose a star.

This was such a quick and fun read. I absolutely love how much Lindsay Buroker's books can get me out of a slump. The story itself isn't one of a kind or incredibly nuanced, but her books do what I really look for in books: to make me happy. That's enough for me.

I got this book for free as part of a "get the first for free" on Apple's iBook store.
I've already grabbed the second one. This was a great fantasy / steampunky kind of universe. Military action, little mushy stuff, fantasy elements like a lost magical world.
Very easy and quick read. Good fun

While not perfect, I really enjoyed the book and will definitely read again at some point (I actually listened to it on Audible and the voice actor was amazing).
Something I really liked about this book, and that seems somewhat uncommon, was that the main characters were well into adulthood. This really brought a maturity to the book and their relationship. They were comfortable in who they were and how to navigate a relationship with another person. I didn't find myself rolling my eyes at their choices/behavior. The male love interest has a healthy appreciation of the female main character and her independence/abilities; he's not controlling (toxic) as romance books unfortunately tend to romanticize.

I enjoyed the setting being not as medieval and more steampunk fantasy. It was very fast paced, almost to much, I would have liked the author to take the time to go more in depth into Sardelle and ridge. I feel like I understood Ridge's past and overall character better than hers. I also felt the romance was too rushed because of this. It was a fun read, I just wanted to know so much more into the magic of this world.

This book just wasn't my cup of tea. I've enjoyed a number of the author's other books and appreciate the way she's always trying something new. As usual, her characters are well-developed and her conversational dialogue and banter between them really stands out as a strength of the work. I just wish I cared more for the worldbuilding, or were invested enough in the characters to care about the romance developing between them.
Overall, I think I'm more of a fan of the author's science fiction than I am her fantasy and her steampunk. The worldbuilding in the sci-fi books appeals to me more and feels like a more interesting backdrop for the inevitable romance elements that she always works into her books. I think those characters tend to be a little better developed and more unique as well.
I'll continue to be a fan of the author's work and will eagerly anticipate everything she writes, but I don't think I'm going to continue on in this particular series, and will probably stick with her sci-fi offerings unless a new title in her fantasy or steampunk offerings really jumps out at me.
