I picked up this book with a lot of hesitation because I had read in a lot of early reviews that this is not a very good translation. Now I've enjoyed most of the Higashino works that I've read, so I was worried this would ruin it for me.

Now I'm no expert in Japanese translation so I have no opinion about the translation itself. However, from the very beginning, it reads a little different from the familiar Higashino style of writing. There is very awkward phrasing at many places, like it was not even touched by an editor. Some sentences just make your eyes bleed.

Surprisingly though, the second half read fine. Either it got a good pair of eyes or mine had gotten too used to the clunky language. Nevertheless, the pace was good, there was enough happening to make me want to keep reading, and I was also enjoying it thoroughly.

The ending, however, was kind of a letdown. It was pretty predictable to start with, but beyond that, it was also not too satisfactory. But then it could be just that I was expecting my mind to be blown by the reveal but when that didn't happen, I couldn't digest the disappointment.

Definitely not his best, but if you get beyond the first few chapters, the book is a fairly decent read.

As usual, Higashino has paved the plot by shockingly plot twist and a well enigma narrative. One aspect that is different from the rest of his novels is that this book did not involve any policeman or detective. The benefit and detriment of The Name of the Game is a Kidnapping is its insistence on keeping the narrative from the perspective of a single person. With exactly one frame of mind to view the story from, what should be a game of cat-and-mouse becomes that much more restricted. And while such a narrative eventually benefits from a last minute twist, the twist itself happens far too late into the story to have any kind of significance outside of its initial shock value—an overall average novel with an average amount of enjoyment.

Lâu lắm rồi mới đọc được một cuốn hấp dẫn từ đầu đến cuối như vậy, nội dung truyện hay, nhân vật thú vị. Tuy nhiên vẫn có mấy chi tiết chưa được xử lý tốt, nên đoán được một phần nhưng còn phần còn lại thì bất ngờ thật !
Mà bìa sau spoil hơi ghê 😑

Mình mất không nhiều thời gian để hoàn thành xong cuốn này. Cuốn sách có mạch truyện rất gây tò mò và lôi cuốn người đọc, vì mình không biết sắp tới sẽ xảy ra cái gì. Ngay từ đầu khi nhân vật Sakuma lên ý tưởng trò chơi và nghĩ rằng anh sẽ thắng thì mình đã nghĩ rằng trò chơi sẽ không đơn thuần kết thúc dễ dàng như vậy, nhưng khổ nỗi vắt óc mãi ra hàng chục cái giả thuyết vẫn không đoán ra được sự việc gì sẽ xảy đến tiếp theo. Cú plot khá hay và thú vị, phải đến gần cuối mình mới để ý, cách thức gây án khá công phu và hack não, nói chung là cuộc đấu trí của hai con người ưu tú vậy thì mình đọc chỉ biết mắt chữ A miệng chữ O. Tuy nhiên vấn đề mình muốn nói ở đây là các tuyến nhân vật và cái kết. Mình cảm thấy các nhân vật ở đây tuy thông minh và nhanh trí nhưng xấu xa không tả nổi. Đều có lòng tự trọng cao và vô cùng ích kỉ. Mình cứ nghĩ rằng cái kết sẽ cho mình một cái gì đó nhân văn và sâu sắc như những cuốn khác của Keigo đã từng nhưng không, một cái kết cụt ngủn, sau khi gỡ rối khúc mắc thì ngắt luôn tại đó, mình không bắt sóng được những tần số cảm xúc của các tuyến nhân vật, nhưng nếu thật sự là các nhân vật chỉ có vậy, thì có phải ác quá không vậy? :( Tóm lại, truyện không thỏa mãn mình lắm và so với những tác phẩm trước đây của Keigo thì tác phẩm này không được đánh giá cao. Tuy nhiên nói sao thì nói, dường như trong bất cứ câu truyện nào Keigo cũng đều cho mình rất nhiều kiến thức, góc nhìn ở nhiều phương diện khác nhau, giọng văn lôi cuốn đặc trưng làm mình không thể bỏ sách xuống được. Keigo luôn là tác giả sách yêu thích của mình và nó càng được củng cố hơn qua mỗi lần mình đọc thêm một tác phẩm mới của ông! Thực sự khâm phục và ngưỡng mộ Keigo 👍💜
