This book is a perfect addition to the avatar universe. Kyoshi has a great journey as she comes into herself as the avatar. She's allowed to be violent and chaotic. She's very bi. She does crimes. She has a flying bison and a Fire Nation girlfriend and war fans.

I loved how morally grey all of the characters were in general. Everyone does bad things and ends up in complicated situations. I also loved what the characters did with bending, especially earthbending. There was so much fascinating innovation and experimentation.

Anyway, you should definitely read this book if you like this universe!

Overall a nice read. I'll take any new atla content I can get. I found it a bit boring at times but I enjoyed the group dynamics and insight into Kyoshi's life.

I loved this book. Kyoshi is probably my favorite Avatar that we know about from the series and I think this first book just enhances her characterization in the TV shows. The author does a wonderful job giving us depth to the characters in the story and adding even more world-building. I look forward to reading the second book in the series.

How can I not give this 5 stars? It's avatar!

I didn't expect to like it this much, since I didn't care much for Kyoshi in the show, but this book adds context to why she was such a bitch in ATLA. Also loved seeing things from the show back in de books. Jep.

Maybe some characters could have been developed a bit more. But it is still ya (and avatar), so I'm more forgiving. Also we just got spoiled with the original.

Really curious to see where the rest of the series is headed.
