Push everything you thought about Kyoshi from the beloved TV series aside and be immersed in the beginning stages of her life and training. Every page solidified her case for justice, doing right by her promises and ambitions. Fall in love with the unlikely cast of characters she inherited from her parents much like her iconic fans and headdress.
While she never knew her parents as well as her bending teachers, she found that she may not have been too different in idealogoy
Breaking the tradition of avatars being groomed and trained from young childhood, The Rise of Kyoshi makes you question what you thought about their role in the universe entirely along with Kyoshi herself.

I couldn’t get over the fact that a queer woman avatar’s story was written by a man. Overall, Kiyoshi’s story seemed fitting for what we see of her in ATLA, and the descriptions allowed me to picture how this would look animated. I’m left with unanswered questions, so I’ll be continuing into the next volume.

Absolutely amazing.  I was worried this book wouldn’t live up to the ATLA series but it was everything I wanted and more. The characters were complex and imperfect making it sometimes difficult to love them, but it made them all the more real

I might be biased towards this book because I love Atla, but overall I loved it. I like how the author was able to incorporate details from an already established universe and create a new story from it. The plot was solid and I really liked the antagonist. I just love smart manipulative villains. I love Kyoshi's character development and the romance was a nice addition. I think the highlight of the story is the worldbuilding, though, and
the deaths of Kelsang and Lek came out of nowhere and completely blindsided me. It hit me straight in the feels.

The writing was easy to read and flows nicely. It might not have that much of an impact on me because I paused the book for a few months or so before continuing it again, so I probably lost some nuance along the way. I still enjoyed it, though.

Written in a YA style, this book definitely has a different vibe to it than the cartoons set in the same universe, yet it definitely still belongs in it.
