This was a great book I buddy read with my sister as we grew up watching the Avatar series. This was an exciting read whether or not you watched the show, but full of little nuggets of foreshadowing and nods to the TV series.

This was definitely YA, not PG like the kids show. Kyoshi is a notoriously murderous Avatar and this is her back story. Unlike the stories of Aang and Korra which spend a lot of time showing how they worked tirelessly to master elements, this book is more about the political landscape and how Kyoshi became the legend she is in the time of the TV series. There were a lot of twists and turns, characters you loved, loved and hated, and loved to hate. The author really brought the culture of the Earth Kingdom to life—the good and the bad—and used classic Avatar sage wisdom mixed with well-timed humor.

My sister and I are excited to continue to the next book and watch the Kyoshi movie when it comes out in a few years!

Absolutely amazing.  I was worried this book wouldn’t live up to the ATLA series but it was everything I wanted and more. The characters were complex and imperfect making it sometimes difficult to love them, but it made them all the more real

I might be biased towards this book because I love Atla, but overall I loved it. I like how the author was able to incorporate details from an already established universe and create a new story from it. The plot was solid and I really liked the antagonist. I just love smart manipulative villains. I love Kyoshi's character development and the romance was a nice addition. I think the highlight of the story is the worldbuilding, though, and
the deaths of Kelsang and Lek came out of nowhere and completely blindsided me. It hit me straight in the feels.

The writing was easy to read and flows nicely. It might not have that much of an impact on me because I paused the book for a few months or so before continuing it again, so I probably lost some nuance along the way. I still enjoyed it, though.

This is a perfect book for those who enjoyed ATLA and are apart of the fandom. It’s a perfect way to start off a prequel and to showcase just how Kyoshi became the icon that she is. I already knew she was amazing but seeing her journey solidifies that even more. This was a great book to start the year off with and I can’t wait to start book 2.

Written in a YA style, this book definitely has a different vibe to it than the cartoons set in the same universe, yet it definitely still belongs in it.
