Read as part of the Audrey listen along hosted on the StoryGraph app. My Brontë knowledge was woefully lacking as I had only read Jane Eyre and tried and failed to get through Wuthering Heights so I really wanted to get some more Brontës under my belt.

I really enjoyed this and loved Anne’s writing style; this must have been incredibly progressive and brave for the time although perhaps still a long way off a modern idea of feminism.

I would love to hear the story from Helen’s point of view as well as Gilbert’s; how different would Helen’s diary have been without Gilbert’s potential editing of it? And do we know that Helen was truly happy with her lot at the end? Enquiring minds want to know.

But regardless I enjoyed the story so much that I was sad when it ended.

how do i begin to review this book?

the brontë sisters have long been a fascination of mine. although nothing can replace jane eyre in my heart, the tenant comes close. anne’s helen is more firm and opinionated than charlotte’s jane and more tender and noble than emily’s catherine. that’s not to say i didn’t find her a little bit too good for my tastes - certainly her self-sacrificing and self-righteous ways annoyed me a little. yet, i quite enjoyed reading this! (i also found it interesting that both anne and emily make use of a character relating events to another to tell their stories).

i’d like to think that anne was probably a feminist, judging from the opinions of her characters (we STAN). i also think gilbert markham is markedly (is this counted as a pun?) a better love interest than those from anne’s sisters’ books - he remains steadfast in his belief of helen’s character despite the rumours engulfing their neighbourhood. and the ending was very sweet; the perfect happy ending. overall, i think the tenant is a joy to read and is very severely underrated.

Preferred this over the other Brontë books I’ve read (Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre). But many of the characters are so unlikeable I had a hard time really liking the story.

The Audrey experience was wonderful, and helped me appreciate the book.

Anne Brontë, the youngest of the Brontë sisters, is often considered one of the most underrated writers. Having read her sisters’ books, I was curious about Anne. I am happy to say she lived up to my expectations. She is more of a realist as a writer than her sisters. She is also a feminist and progressive thinker. I loved the book!

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a story about Helen, who suffers physically and mentally at the hands of her alcoholic husband. Anne tackles social issues that were probably considered taboo at the time the book was written such as alcoholism, adultery, and physical violence. The story is told through a series of letters written by one of the leading male characters, Gilbert, to his brother-in-law, but it depicts Helen as an independent, bold, and forward-thinking woman.

I listened to the story on the Audrey App and participated in their listen-along. It’s always an enriching experience to share thoughts with other readers. Our guide, Rebecca is a PhD student who focuses on Victorian fiction. Her expert knowledge and resources were invaluable to my reading of the book.
