The description in this novel is thorough and lovely. This book was amazing and I would definitely read it again, as well as read from this author again. I really liked the narrative style, it is something I would like to bring to my own writing.

This book tricked me. It started out slow. Details and emotions gathered.

I despised the main characters until I didn't. This is an extremely sneaky story. Your tears might not match mine.

Honestly, I had no idea what to expect from this book. I’ve tried reading horror before and haven’t been able to get through it - so “creepy” seemed a good thing to try. First, I really liked the writing style and the construction of the story. It kept me hooked, waiting for the inevitable explanation that would make all these slightly-off things to make sense. And to me, it was worth the wait. It was just so different from the books I usually read and really had me itching for more. Would love to read more by this author!

Ooooof.

I know there's still stuff I probably missed, but the things I did manage to catch through the well-written unreliable narration was unsettling and enthralling. Hardaker is excellent at using her narration of what should be normal, everyday interactions in terror-inducing, nightmarish ways - our main character Norah is fraught with anxiety and poetic language, and the weird, unsettling details sprinkled within the text are constantly teasing you with whether they're actually diagetic or just embellishment.

Living in the precursor to catastrophic climate change as we very well may be, this was a depressing read, a presentation of a world that's just limping along with enough self-cannibalism to keep the dwindling rich alive, feeding in a much more literal way on the masses and pretending that everything else is fine.

That's probably enough of a review for now. I'll be thinking about this one for some time.

What happens when the organism that is meant for one purpose becomes beloved? What sacrifices are worth compromise in love, friendship, work, and home? This book brings to the forefront ethics surrounding harvesting from organisms seen as matter rather than a being.”
