I just could not get into this book. A few of the letters were lovely…I mean Emezi has a way with words…I will not lie. However, I got somewhere in the middle and just did not want to pick this up again. Memoir is probably my least favorite genre. Except those by professional comedians (which I often love), it often comes across to me as self-indulgent. That is how this felt to me. And some stories were just metaphor after metaphor. Not for me.

I’m glad that I listened to this on audio, narrated by the author. It made each letter, every story, come alive. But this book was also full of so much wisdom that I want to grasp and go back to… I think I’ll be getting a hard copy to annotate!

Can’t tell if Amezi is fully vulnerable or keeping us readers at arm’s length. But either way, it’s beautiful, sometimes difficult, sometimes insightful.

This was beautifully written. I'd never heard of this author before I picked up their memoir, but I really want to read more of their books now!

Dear Senthuran is such an extraordinary book! Emezi's writing is poetic, powerful, funny, and full of uncomfortable and brutal honesty. this is a trans memoir, a memoir of indigenous cosmologies, a memoir of mental illness - but also not just not being of this world. It's a memoir about transition and transcendence. I read a review that said Emezi is arrogant, but what's wrong with that? Such a stunning piece of work about too many things to list in a review, not for the fainthearted.
