To be honest, I only read about a third of this - all that was required for class. Spooky! But a little repetitive to read all in one sitting.

Poe's stories aren't quite as terrifying as they were when I was a child, but they are still grisly and otherworldly enough to give me the chills. He is the master of terror and suspense for good reason! And his poems are hauntingly beautiful enough to be unforgettable.

I find, to my horror, that terrible truth I have hoped to avoid: I love Poe's writing. I love his wandering, complex, tormented prose and his relentless poetry. I love his approach to writing. I do not like the man himself, but here in this anthology I find a beautiful, pulpy kind of literary home. Damn it.

read a selection, and for the most part thoroughly enjoyed! however, though I know and appreciate that it is specifically a collection of short stories, I really would have loved to get some more plot development. some of the endings felt rushed and a bit like a cop-out. particularly the story about the man with the moral fear of being buried alive - which ends with him overcoming the fear? not exactly the conclusion I would have hoped for from an Edgar Allan Poe story.

There is no denying that Poe was brilliant. I found myself having to pull out my dictionary on many occasions. However, I only liked a few things he wrote. Of course, I like The Raven, The Bells and Annabel Lee. I had never heard of The Gold-Bug and found it an interesting read along with The Tell-Tale Heart (which reminded me a bit of Crime and Punishment), The Black Cat and The Murders in the Rue Morgue. I saw The Fall of the House of Usher with Vincent Price as a little girl and loved it. Sadly, I didn’t love the story as much as the movie. Poe is a little macabre and morose for me, but he was quite obviously very intelligent and well-versed.

(Semi-audio.) People are depressed. Gross things happen. Gothic homes. Drunk guy murders cat, just BECUZ. The end.

Warning to all the good people of the internet: do not listen to the cat story while eating dinner, it will really ruin your appetite.
