Another good read. It was hard to put this one down and resist reading it straight through. Granted, not so much because I wanted to find out who or what was eating people's essences (though I was curious), but because I wanted to see the further development of Kara's relationships (w/Ryan, Jill, Zach, etc). I loved the texting between Ryan and Kara - hilarious! How can Kara not have a crush on her best bud? I can see why she likes him and why his friendship means so much to her.

From Kara's own internal dialog, she's gone awhile without any real friends. Being different and having to keep what she really is a secret, it sort of makes it tough to get close to people, making for a lonely existence. This makes Kara vulnerable. Her vulnerability, I think is what makes her so appealing. I think its also what causes her to constantly double guess herself about Ryan and Rhyzkahl [rez-call]. She longs so deeply to feel close to people, to love and to be loved, that we read her questioning her motives and feelings throughout the story.

There wasn't as much police procedural as in the first book, which I'm thankful for. At this point, reading forward, I'd be happy if the police procedural began to take a backdrop to the more interesting, human interest story. For me that would be the relationships and lives of the main characters.

I'm looking forward to reading Book 3. I can't wait. Good thing I got paid already. :)

I got a bit confused with all the victims at one point but apart from that I really liked this book

The second installation in the Kara Gillian series made me just as excitable as the first. I absolutely love love love this series. Did I mention I love this series? I don’t know WHAT it is about this series but I love absolutely everything about it. This is me, reading this series:

In ‘Blood of the Demon’ Kara is investigating a series of suicides where the individuals essence wasn’t released from their body the way a normal death would; their essence appeared to have been ripped forcibly from their body and Kara can’t figure out why or who could have done this. Rhyzkahl has requested that Kara be his ‘summoner’ where she would have access to his power and knowledge, she would just be required to summon him often. Kara begins realizing that there is in fact more than meets the eye with Ryan; but he’s not being as forth coming with information as she would like him to be. Kara’s Aunt Tessa remains in a coma as a result of the Symbol Man’s last summoning with her essence seemingly lost. Without her Aunt, Kara is left to learn on her own and it’s really awesome to see her grow as a summoner in this book.

The one irritating factor I had with the book which resulted in the 4 stars (since I still really liked it) was the Ryan and Kara relationship. I have wanted Ryan and Kara to be together from the very beginning. I LOVE those two. So. This is an adult novel; however, when Kara denies the fact that Ryan likes her, when Kara gets jealous at Ryan for lame ass things, or when Ryan does something but Kara justifies it in her mind as him being ‘just a friend’, I feel as if I’ve stepped into a Young Adult novel. And trust me; if I wanted to read a YA novel type relationship I’ve got plenty of books to satisfy that. But here I am reading a nice Adult novel and I feel like I’ve stepped into the YA Twilight Zone.

The ending? Ah! It made me go all ‘OMG Excited Cat’ all over again. Anyways, bottom line. You need to read this. I HIGHLY recommend it. It’s totally awesome and… well I love it. :D

I need to know things! Yes, a good book should leave you wanting more and this one sure left me wanting more.

What's up with Ryan? And my fav Demon Lord? Awww the questions. Ok I got one question, not a lot but I just want to know what will happen to Kara...many more books to come! Luckily I do have 2 more.

The book then. Murders to be solved and quite the hunt. All while dealing with the aftermath that left her aunt half dead. And then there is that demon lord she summoned by accident too ;)

I do not have a lot to say, I just want to read book 3 at once. It did not end with a cliffie but I still crave more.

So yes of course I recommend this one.

The main plot (dealing with her investigating the deaths) was very complicated and hard to keep track of. I still really enjoyed it, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series!

Kara's quite entertaining, as in the first book, but the excessive use of certain words is grating on my nerves every now and again. Definitely worth a read, though.

The world build in this series is cool. I like the heroine. I'm really over the puedo-boyfriend. He's kind of a jerk and I feel like Kara is with him because her alternatives are to be with a Demon Lord or alone. Honestly, I'm hoping future novels in this series will have more on the demon world building and less on the "love triangle".

This book is just fun! I do prefer Rowland's White Trash Zombie series to her demon one, but both are still a good time.

If you are looking for literature, this is not that. It's about a cop in New Orleans who can also summon demons. In this second book, a case just happens to drop in her lap that crosses into the supernatural. We still don't find out too much about the mysterious FBI agent that she likes, but the reader is teased with a few nuggets.

There were times when I, as the reader, had connected the dots long before the main character did, and that was a little frustrating. I do like to figure things out, but I'd rather it happen right before it's revealed rather than yelling at the book, "Come on, already!"

I am definitely intrigued enough to put book 3 on my list, but it will be a while before I get to it.

Blood of the Demon
4 Stars

When a fellow detective at the Beaulac PD is found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Kara Gillian, demon summoner, is the only one to see that her friend’s essence has been ripped from his body. And so begins a series of disturbing murders linked to the upper echelons of Beaulac society and perhaps to Kara’s personal life as well…

Once again, Rowland has successfully merged the suspense elements with the paranormal to create engaging characters and a gripping story.

The murder mystery is well-written with an interesting pool of suspects and motivations. The resolution is satisfying, although I did manage to guess the culprit a few minutes in advance, and the final confrontation is somewhat Deus Ex Machina.

The demonology of Gillian’s world is detailed and fascinating. One thing that is a little unbelievable is the fact that several secondary characters suddenly have connections to the Arcane - how convenient!

Despite the fact that she is completely clueless about men and needs to brush up on her police procedure
Spoilerwhat kind of cop leaves their gun in the car?
, Kara is a very appealing heroine and it is fun seeing her slowly opening up to people and allowing them to get closer to her, as she is a rather lonely person.

There are also developments in Kara’s relationships with the two men in her life. Although he has one or two judgmental jerk moments, Ryan is turning into a very compelling character and I look forward to learning more about his mysterious identity. I’m more conflicted about Rhyzkahl as he obviously has ulterior motives when it comes to Kara. Moreover, the fact that
SpoilerKara had sex with him just to spite Ryan feels wrong even though they are not technically together
.

On a final note, there is still an excessive use of vulgarity, but perhaps I’m getting used to it as it doesn’t bother me as much as in the first book. Lastly, Liv Andersen’s narration remains slow but this is easily solved with 1.25 speed.

All in all, this series is an entertaining combination of mystery, humor and romance.
