What appealed to me in this book was that it was not about being introduced to society with balls, which the books in these genre are often about. Instead the plot is slightly more original. It's about Abby, her sister Jane and two friends. They are very poor and try to make a living. Abby comes across an old neglected lady and decides to take care of her. This is a nice quick and very easy read.

Re-read June 2017
I had spaced on this series, and never got the rest of the books as they came out. Glancing through my shelves to find something to read next, I saw this book and was like oh! So I re-read, to remember the details, before digging into the next.

This is a fun kind of Cinderella story. The romance happens fast - I'd love to have spent like double the time developing it, because right now it sort of just explodes into being - but it doesn't really detract from it. It is a sweet story, with wonderful, funny, fierce, loving, loyal characters.

And Lady Beatrice is the best.

I've been on a historical romance kick over the holidays, and I saw on NPR books that this was named one of the best romances of 2013. What a treat! Although hardly revolutionary, this is a nice twist on the traditional Victorian romance, and Gracie writes well. I enjoyed it and will read the sequels.

I love Historical Romances and this one is not a typical historical. It was such a terrific read! Anne Gracie is one of my automatic reads authors. From orphan to governess to thief to Lady, Abby is a protective, sweet heroine. Such an unusual back story, definitely one I've never heard or read. Can't wait to read more of the Chance sisters!

A great start to a new series by Anne Gracie. Governess Abby is excited to finally see her sister after six years. As orphans they only have each other, but when word gets to Abby that her sister is in trouble she moves heaven and earth to save her. Now Abby, her sister, and their new adopted sisters find themselves alone in London trying to survive on their wits. When they are so far down on their luck Abby attempts to steal from the house next door she finds Lady Beatrice, bedridden and neglected. She realizes she has to do something so she and her sisters storm the front door claiming to be Lady Beatrice’s nieces, tossing out the servants and helping Lady Bea recover her strength. Everything is going to plan until Max, Lady Bea’s nephew, comes home to four new family members he never knew about. He’s determined to find out Abby’s end game but as they slowly get to know each other he finds that no matter what her origins are, he cares about her. But someone is after Abby and Max will do anything to protect. I enjoyed this story, not as smexy as what I’m used to but I’m really excited to see where this is going to go with the remaining sisters.
