I'm interested in the books that each country determines to be required reading for its children. And it's somehow really reassuring to mention Storm Boy to people a generation above me and hear "I remember studying that in primary school", and then the next week hear the same thing from my students a generation below me

It was interesting returning to this book after 30 something years. I have strong memories of the film and thought I might read this to my class as an end-of-year quickie.
Turns out I wasn't as impressed as I remembered. The sense of "place" is great, but I am not sure whether that was due to the text or the pictures included from the film. The text was a lot simpler than I expected. This might be one of the few occasions where I prefer the film to the book. I will revisit that too over the next couple of weeks!

When I was in primary school Colin Thiele came to our school and gave a talk. I remember bits of that talk, the humour and how this man inspired me to want to write. I read this boo based on that school visit and it is a wonderful book. It is not what you expect and that makes it so special.

This book was so heartbreaking and hopeful, I wanna cry.
So I listened to the audiobook for this and it was an EXPERIENCE MAN
It had music and the sound of waves crashing and birds singing and squawking pelicans, my heart and soul, I absolutely loved every minute and it just transported me into the story.
Its taken me 19 years to finally read/ listen to this classic. For some weird reason we never did this at school despite this book being an ABSOLUTE STAPLE??? like, all my sisters did this in school but me.
Whelp! Time to watch the movie now!!

My main motivation in purchasing this story is so I can prepare myself to see the theatrical adaption which will be in Brisbane this year. It is a beautifully told Australian Children's novel set in a spectacular part of my country and highlights the strong, yet sometimes unsuspecting connects that animals and humans can develop.

Read this aloud to my eldest as part of his marine and aquaculture technology course and we both LOVED it! Now to see how the movie stacks up.
