This one didn't fully grab me until halfway through but when it did, it had me in a choke hold. I absolutely adore how the two main characters solve their problems in this. I found it very inventive and fitting for their characters.

I might've loved him for that, I thought, if I hadn't already loved him anyway.

this book had me gnawing my own arm off. academic rivals who genuinely do not like each other who experience forced proximity via magic and grow to like each other. as they get closer, they're still just as obnoxious towards each other but with an underlying current of intimacy.

the magic system is super fun. some people can only write magic and some people can only cast. our pov character is able to channel his magic through music. the magic system also props up the worldbuilding and makes it super engaging.

our couple had me kicking my feet. they're soooooooo

pleasantly surprised by how much i enjoyed this one… will read the next one when it comes out!

So good. I hugged the book to my chest when I finished. I love so much about this. The world was bright and colorful (except for the woods which were literally dark and creepy). The main characters, Leo and Grimm are each delightful and make a lovable duo. Tropes also on my favorites list:
-forbidden spells
-academic setting for people with magic
-recluse sorceress who lives in a magical tower in the forest
-weird and quirky monsters
-creative start of a slow-burn, a loathe-to-love, and of a secret-ish relationship
Of note, I like to round up for debut novels, but this is a true five. A total reread.

This was a cute cozy fantasy! It gave exactly everything that I expected — a charming, messy narrator coupled with a brilliant stick-in-the mid love interest, an engaging romp through an enchanted forest, fun banter. I got kind of bored in the middle there when there — there's only so many ways you can make wandering through a forest interesting. And I did want something *more* out of the romance, in the end. Still, a charming debut!

a sweet character study with intriguing worldbuilding that suffers from a sandbagged first third. setup takes longer than ideal for meaningful attachment to the main characters which is made up for in a very engaging back-half. compelling character development and unreliable narration makes for a satisfying conclusion despite a leave-them-guessing ending. eager to see more of the world in future installments to see if framework holds.
