The old man's discovery of the world through literature is in opposition with the events taking place in his village. While those who gain positions of power there are of no service to the people, while tourists disrespect locals' way of life and privacy, the old man travels with his mind and learns about others' reality. I have enjoyed following him in his endeavors of curiosity.
Furthermore, despite the heavy themes of colonialism and violence, this book does a good job of illustrating escapism, with its benefits and limitations.
