An early outing by Shakespeare, amd not one of his best. Some inconsistencies in character and setting. The infamous rape exchange in act 5 is odd and off-putting.
However, it was interesting to see the early genesis of so many themes and tropes that Shakespeare would return to over and over again in his works including the pastoral refuge, the Italian setting, cross-dressing, men's inconsistency in love, the fools (both sharp and buffoonish). It also showed an already apparent talent for weaving metaphor consistently throughout, such as the running allusions to Ariadne used by Julia, as well as a talent for the comedic malapropism.

I would’ve rated it higher if Proteus didn’t get a happy ending like how is he going to try and rape Silvia after lying and saying his fiancé is dead, calling her ugly in comparison to Silvia, backstabbing LITERALLY EVERYONE IN THE PLAY. AND STILL GET A HAPPY ENDING??
AND WHY DID VALENTINE TRY TO SAY HE COULD HAVE SILVIA IN AN ATTEMPT TO STOP HIM RAPING HER?? WHAT.
Julia?? Why?? Don’t take this man back you can do so much better.
Also why was the entire conflict of the play cleared up in a single short ass scene? Entire play was filled with conflict but no it’s all solved because the Duke casually changes his mind? Weak
Anyway main takeaway from this waa FuckProteus and JusticeForJulia
