“Am I hideous, Jane?
Very, sir: you always were, you know.”
Has there ever been a book I've loved more? No!
Such an old story, yet it feels so modern. Love love love!

I started this book a couple of times this year and didn’t go far before I stopped reading. Until some days ago when I decided to give it another try and listened to the audiobook and simultaneously read my physical copy from the very start. It had a slow start and a lot could have been omitted throughout the book but I liked it for what it was. The romance, even if it was an important aspect no doubt, was secondary to Jane’s perseverance and character. She has effortlessly become a most loved and admired character for me and her story one that I’m overly pleased I finally got to this year.

This is a classic for a reason. It's obviously a masterfully-written, well-rounded book, but there are two aspects I specificially enjoyed :
- the depth, complexity of some characters, though it was a bit disappointed to see some depicted as unredeemable or almost not human (Bertha of course, but also Ms Reed)
- how nature was written, its portrayal so vivid and physical you often feel it around you

GOATED book. You basically take the common dark, romantic soup from nowadays -
(you know what I mean, the: "I hate you!" "Say it again.")
- but write it better, with a lady with agency. Moxie.
I mean, it is Regency/Victorian Era so the agency isrich uncle dies and leaves inheritance to her , but still.
Also, Rochester? Smash. Next question. He is lowkey kinda not a great guy.
Also the thing with the preacher cousin is fuckin' weird and there is a portion in the 2/4-3/4th portion that's a bit boring, but good payoff. Necessary.
