This was a poignant, introspective novel exploring the complex bond between a mother and daughter. Through minimalist prose and emotional depth, Strout captures Lucy’s journey of self-discovery and reconciliation with her past. I found it to be a beautifully crafted, moving portrait of family and personal resilience.

Recommended to me by my mother-in-law. It was a peaceful sort of book but surprisingly tragic material. I had thought it would be more like the cozy stories my good friend describes as "the literary equivalent of a cup of hot chocolate" (Jenny Colgan's bookshop series), but this was more like a cup of strong tea with milk (no sugar) -- good for sitting and thinking, keeps you company, offers comfort. There is a bitter undertone but it is balanced and part of the whole.
