A departure from what I usually read this book was something I picked up as the subject matter was very similar to my university dissertation. What this book has done is completely rethink how the UK armed forces looks, acts and develops. Frank Ledwidge is the sort of person I would love to have met during my dissertation, he forensically examines the UK armed forces, apportions blame where it is needed and provides clear guidance how to go forward. An armed forces in the shape of what Ledwidge suggestions would be one many of my fellow graduates would have considered joining rather than recalling in horror at the suggestion.

The main criticism I have of this book is the constant suggestion that the US military is doing it all really well. I am sure many an American scholar has written articles and books on how the US military failed in Iraq and Afghanistan yet from this book you would have thought they had won and Iraq and Afghanistan were beacons of hope and democracy which we all know they aren't.
