This book is so overwhelmingly heartbreaking, but there are enough good and beautiful moments to make it bearable. Noriko is abandoned by her mother to live with her old-fashioned royal grandmother who mistreats her by keeping her confined, beating her when she disobeys and giving her painful skin treatments to lighten her dark skin that she inherited from her Black American father (who her mother was not married to). I really loved the character of Akira, Noriko's older half-brother, who does his best to protect Noriko from their grandmother. Akira is serious and gruff but truly loves his sister. Noriko faces so many challenges and struggles with seeing herself as worthy of love but does not become bitter.

A beautiful and tragic historical fiction. 
Fifty Words for Rain was rich with beautiful imagery, but tied within the beauty is a story full of tragedy. An innocent child born into a family stuck in the tradition of royalty, and blaming her for any shortcomings their family may have.

Nori suffers deeply at the hands of her Grandfather and Grandmother, and many other adults who all fail to protect her. 

The story spans over 20 years of history, and across two continents. You’ll grow with Nori, and feel for a young woman who has been forced to grow up too fast, but stayed the little innocent child all the same.

It is a tragically beautiful read. It’s simply pain upon pain but it’s still so hopeful despite how bleak it is. It seems so painfully unnecessary to put Nori through everything she went through. Do not read this story unless you’re ready for your heart to break multiple times.

Also trigger warnings galore. Like everything that could possibly have gone wrong went wrong. Like truly a fucking tragedy this book is.
