This was a devastating book about a abusive relationship. Told in fragments of memories. I loved the experimental style and thought her writing style was duper fluid. I got through this book so quickly as the chapters are short and leave you wanting to get through some of the harder sections. But it added so much to the experience because it was like you were trying to escape the relationship with her.

I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. I still have a lump in my throat as I write this review, because on god, this book took me to a rollercoaster of emotions. Brilliant and poignant writing, thorough research, and the kind of book that really brings out your empathy. You can tell that Carmen Maria Machado has a lot of compassion while writing this, she wants to reveal the ugly truth of queer abusive relationship, but she also wants to tell others who might find themselves in similar situations that there's hope, that someone will believe you. This so hard-hitting for me who has been in a toxic relationship, i think i will cry again while reading some of the quotes that hit too close to home. This book is an important read for everyone. The writing style is easy to digest, although caution is very much needed.

"A reminder to remember: just because the sharpness of the sadness has faded does not mean that it was not, once, terrible. It means only that time and space, creatures of infinite girth and tenderness, have stepped between the two of you, and they are keeping you safe as they were once unable to."

A haunting and terrible tale about domestic abuse. Machado writes about her own experience being in a queer relationship and going through the ups of falling in love and finding who she really is juxtaposed with the downs of being gaslighted and abused. It read like a fever dream, each chapter a disjointed exploration of “the dream house.” I’ve never read a memoir like this and is the only book I’ve read of hers, yet you can tell she is a poet because of the lyrical style of her prose. I cannot say I enjoyed it in a true sense, but I think her writing is lyrical, her voice is unique, and that more discussions about same-sex domestic abuse and across all relationship types should be had.

The format is so creative. It’s like Machado invented a new way (ways?) to talk about abuse and her experiences.

Machado writes stunningly. No other word does her talent justice. “In the Dream House,” uses incredibly interesting literary devices and the conceptualization of the dream/house is brilliant. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book, just beware it’s written in the second person.

This book was so easy to consume and so upsetting to digest. Carmen Maria Machado has gorgeous way of defining and then sharing horrifying truths. The sections reflecting on the love of her friends and the people who valued around her was beautiful. I had to take a few breaks while reading this, but I'm glad I did, and I appreciate the shared resources at the end of the book and citations throughout, giving further information and history for queer domestic violence.

Such an incredible way to write a true story. Hard to read, harder to listen to the audiobook by the author. So sad to hear about but glad she has found as much peace as she can afterwards.
