“ . . . you can be hurt by people who look just like you. Not only can it happen, it probably will, because the world is full of hurt people who hurt people.”

so beautifully-written, brutal in its honesty, and heartbreaking.

This book is brilliantly written and so important. I loved the poetic writing. I loved the extremely short chapters. I loved the footnotes. I... have no words. Oh my God.

original, contemporary, and a brutal read. some of the most heartbreaking depictions of what it feels like in an emotionally abusive situation. does tend to meander on her writing this book, which distracts from the completely stylized, and almost flawlessly executed, descriptions of the complete experience of an emotionally abusive relationship.

UGHH starting off the year SOOO good. One of if not the most well written book I've ever read. Inspiring beautiful haunting and although it was intense and bleak at times it really ends showing you how you can always overcome trauma and it will be ok. Loved this beyond words my highlighter ran DRY but how much i annotated to many good lines. Will definitely be checking out her body and other parties (if i can find a copy) now that I have read Carmen's writing. Was gonna jump right into speak but i want a somewhat less intense and dark read so let me roam my bookshelves for my next book :)
