The fight scene that volume 5 opens with is bloody and brutal, and we get to see what a much stronger ghoul’s fighting style is like. I love the various kagune and seeing how each one is unique to the body it is attached to. Friendships strengthen and prevail, and the line between human and ghoul blurs just a little more as these characters protect and fight for (and against) one another.
It is nice to see Touka soften a little. She is angry and defensive, and she has every right to be. Life as a ghoul who wants to fit in with humans has not been easy, and I relate to her character’s feelings a lot. Despite the differences in their backgrounds and personal stances, she and Kaneki struggle in very similar ways.
We are treated to a side story about Rize, providing a little more insight to her character. And then we conclude by meeting a new CCG agent Juuzou Suzuya, an androgynous oddball referred to as “the problem child.” Obviously I love Suzuya.
Something this manga does expertly is remind us of the humanity of the ghouls as well as the evil nature humans possess. This story continues to get darker and more fascinating with each turn.
