I loved this book, but honestly it was underwhelming. It needed.. more. It would’ve been nice to see more of the mcs’s relationship and its development.
Lovely read, however I caution that you may need a tissue or two. I loved how both leading characters played there own rolls for others to see. I especially enjoyed when Lord Vere introduced his wife to the Ton and she acted a fool to match his fool. An odd thing though I never once learned Lord Vere's name. His brother called him Penny, and that can't be his name (God I hope not), so what is Penny short for? If the author gave his name out I completely missed it. Any who, I give this book a solid 4 stars, though if it was just for 'Penny's' performance and acting I might just give it a 5!
2.5 stars
There was little chemistry--the two protagonists spend a lot of the time pretending and disliking one another. We can't forget this because the author keeps stating it. The subplot contorts itself into unnecessary complications; simpler is better in this case.

Not my favorite. May need to read first two in series.
I liked it. It was a little crazy - literally - since the hero pretends he's less intelligent after a horrible horse accident (he fell off the horse) 13 years ago.
But the ending was weird for me...It's like the author wanted to shock a reader with every page.

there was a lot going on in this book, much of it laudable, but the things that weren't weren't.
there was great character work, clearly a lot of research went into specific period details, the mystery was intense, there was a genuine grasp that the author was writing a book and not just directly telling us things (which i shouldn't have to say, but lack of editing plagues the romance genre as a whole) and the romance, minus the smut scenes, was solid. that being said, the consent was nowhere to be found.
also there's these 2 side characters that get povs so we can keep up with there romance. i could not have cared less about them. the farce should've gotten thrown away sooner, and the ending was not a proper conclusion, where we establish that he actually did some self improvement instead of just saying that he would.
also the fade to black smut scene is the only one where both parties are sober and consenting. do with that what you will.
